INFORMATION
THE STARTUP
Matterpieces is a surfacing material produced from demolition waste, with the goal of reducing the extraction of natural raw materials and decreasing the amount of waste sent to landfills. It uses the most common aggregates found on construction sites, such as glass, stone, bricks, tiles, and concrete, and can be applied to floors, walls, furniture, and kitchen or bathroom countertops. It is a solution that focuses on waste reuse through a collaborative process, which includes demolition, separation, treatment, and upcycling, transforming waste into a new surfacing material and reintegrating it into the building lifecycle.
WHO WILL BE AT INNOVATION CAFE
Patrícia Gomes is an architect trained at the University of Minho and co-founded the collective Prosaico in 2012, focused on participatory methodologies, material reuse, and community-based public space revitalization. Between 2013 and 2019, she collaborated with the atelier feld72 in Vienna, Austria, on co-housing and social housing projects. In 2020, she founded studio8 in Porto, a laboratory between architecture and material design that explores the intersection of manual craft and digital tools, proposing new solutions for space design and waste recovery. From this practice, Matterpieces was born, a project dedicated to creating circular materials from demolition waste. Through the transformation of existing matter, Matterpieces seeks to generate new material languages and contribute to a more cyclical vision of architecture and construction. Her work stems from a concern with material geology and the memory of places, seeking to preserve them while transforming them into solutions for the future.
Luís Lima is an architect trained at the University of Minho. He co-founded the collective Prosaico in 2012, focused on material reuse, participatory methodologies, and public space interventions. Between 2013 and 2019, he lived in Vienna, where he worked in various ateliers, developing projects related to housing, healthcare spaces, and urban design. Upon returning to Porto, he founded the studio studio8, where he developed a transdisciplinary practice that combines architecture, design, and construction waste repurposing, exploring the transformation of common materials and techniques into circularity solutions. From this research, Matterpieces was born, a project dedicated to developing circular materials produced from waste.
